"To learn to read
is to light a fire;
every syllable that is spelled out
is a spark".

                       (Victor Hugo)

Reading skills play a significant role in English classes. While the vocabulary is currently limited, there are still many opportunities for our pupils to enhance their reading abilities.

To expand on the existing offerings in the textbook, a reading box has been introduced in each of the 5th-grade classes this year. These boxes are filled with books covering a wide range of topics and different levels. This way, there is something to read for everyone.

To mark their place in the book when taking a break, pupils creatively and diligently crafted their own personal bookmarks in the form of corner bookmarks. This makes reading twice as enjoyable.

To ensure that the pupils get to know their first books together and find a variety from the short stories in their English textbooks, we selected two books featuring a main character that is very popular among children: Winnie the Witch.

In Unit 3 of the English class, the topic “’Rooms in the house” was covered. Accordingly, we read the story of Winnie and her house, which is quite unique – everything is in black. The pupils had the opportunity to discover the problems which arise when keeping a black cat, Wilbur, in a black house. The book is filled with amusing illustrations and many witty details. The sentences are kept very short, built-in repetitions also help to reinforce familiar vocabulary, and new words are learnt in a playful and entertaining manner.

This small reading project was complemented with a suitable video. In this way, reading becomes enjoyable. If you would like to watch the video yourself, klick on the image below.

A second story was also read: "Winnie in Winter".
What do you do when you don't like winter at all, when everything is white, cold, frosty and uncormfortable? Winnie has an idea - how it affects her and Wilbur, and what she thinks of winter in the end, is shown in an entertaining way in this book.

After the students had read the story, they crafted new winter hats for Winnie. Snow can come, Winnie is well prepared now.
